Pat was not the first person to discover tiered backlinking building. In fact, I was also building backlinks in tiers in 2010, and even continued to do so in 2011 and 2012.
Does Tiered backlink building still work?

Ok. So that didn’t really answer your question. The truth is that tiered linking or
(pyramid backlinking) can still work. But it’s harder than it used to be. Google is
becoming more efficient at identifying backlink spam and forced rankings.
So although you can make it work, it’s more difficult in 2013, and will continue
to be more difficult in the years to come.
Well Gosh Brendan, there’s gotta be a better way?
… Actually there is, and always has been a better way. The best strategy in 2013 and beyond is to buy and =re-purpose high page rank domains.

What Y’all Still Need to Know…
High page rank domains are absolutely golden in the eyes of Big G. However, there are still ways to get yourself in trouble. Even with high authority domains.
First of all, please DO NOT link all your high pr domains together. This will create an easy footprint for Google. If google is in a grumpy mood, it could deindex everything at once. This is simply a risk you cannot afford to take.
Secondly, make sure that you mix up your anchor texts. The penguin update in 2012 penalized websites that had too many links with the main anchor text.
… it is now (in 2013) best to use a wide range of anchor texts
- only 10-30% your main anchor text
- 20-40% niche related anchor text
- 30-50% generic anchor texts (ie. read more here, click here, etc.)
And finally, create decent quality content on these high PR domains. You can even make money off the page rank domains by adding affiliate links or Adsense. Your goal is for the long term here.
Benefits of “high page rank domains” vs. “pyramid linking”
The old way of building backlinks (pyramid linking) required a TON of content. Not only did the direct backlinks need to have content. But the thousands of backlinks pointing to your main links also required content.
… You could get away with this, in the past, with the help of article spinning. And in fact, article spinning still works to this day, but the articles must be spun at a very high rate, and must be very high quality. The time it takes to spin a good quality article can be very cumbersome (especially at the beginning).
As most would agree, I’d rather create a handful of unique articles than even just one HIGHLY spun post.

Pat Flynn’s old backlink strategy relies on a plethora of spun articles, whereas this new and improved method requires less content that is much better quality.

One cool ninja strategy that must be revealed
The beauty of page rank is that it flows from one domain to another. With only a small handful of high page rank domains, you can easily increase the page rank of other domains.
… from my testing, 4 PR 3 domains can turn 2 brand new PR N/A domain into PR3+. That means that you can actually build high pr domains from scratch. Which will significantly reduce the costs involved in acquiring new pr domains.
Heck, you can even sell newly created PR domains at Digital Point Forums for a chunk of change!
